NEIGHBOURHOOD
Scattered in windswept waters, 16km from the northernmost reaches of the Scottish mainland, lie the 70 or so islands which make up Orkney. Only 20 are inhabited. Located in the heart of the Orkneys, Kirkwall is the perfect base from which to explore the islands, with historic buildings, fascinating architecture and an abundance of independent shops, cafes and more. From captivating culture and wildlife to adreniline-filled activities, you won’t be short on choice.
For the adventurers, there are daily ferries from Kirkwall to the Outer Isles in the summer. Venture aboard and you’ll find a small cluster of magnificent isles waiting to be discovered - ‘ay', you might just fall in love! Westray, Shapinsay, Papay (Bill Bryson’s favourite spot in all of Britain), Hoy, The Gloup and Rousay each have their own charm. You could even enjoy the Worlds shortest flight from Westray to Papa Westray in 2 mins and get a certificate!
